RIP Edu Ferreira
BOAVISTA striker Edu Ferreira has passed away on Christmas Eve, after losing his battle with cancer aged just 20.
The football ace was diagnosed in November last year and succumbed to the illness on Sunday in the Santo António Hospital in Porto.
Edu began training with the club’s first team at the start of the 2016/2017 season but was forced to retire for treatment following the discovery of a tumour in his femur leg bone.
Earlier this month it was revealed at the Portuguese side had renewed the rising star’s contract until 2019, and was continuing to pay his wages.
His current signing was set to expire this season but the club outlined their commitment to his battle.
But tragically, the team released an official statement confirming his death earlier today.
It said: “Understanding the game can be very difficult, especially when sadness knocks at our door because we have just lost one of our own. “We will dedicate this day to remember the good moments that were shared.
“May the pain of our loss be diminished every day and from now on this absence may turn into good memories and be able to further strengthen the bonds of our family. “The void that has remained will never be filled in our hearts. Today, there is one more star in Heaven. Rest in Peace, Edu!”
The football star’s death comes just weeks after the Portuguese side renewed his contract to support him through his illness.
Edu’s funeral will take place on Wednesday, December 27.
