Top 5 long term replacements for Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery at Bayern
FC Bayern will be keen to bring in long-term replacements for their veteran duo “Robbery” as both of them are on the wrong side of 30
Nothing lasts forever, similarly the explosive duo of Arjen Robben and Franck Ribery has provided tireless service to Bayern and needless to say with their years at the club have become fan favourites. But age is against them and in this battle of passion for the club and their age, age looks more likely to win. So as they come towards the end of their career, the Bavarian club will look to bring in players who may have huge boots to fill. Even though Kingsley Coman has stepped up with his performances, Bayern still needs some reinforcements on the wide areas. So we here at LNTUP will discuss the likely options available for FC Bayern.
1. Malcom (Girondins de Bordeaux)
This 20-year-old Samba winger is setting Ligue 1 on fire. The former Corinthians winger plies his trade for mid-table side Bordeaux but has emerged suddenly with a bright spark through his performances. Malcom has scored 7 goals and also provided 4 assists in 16 matches in the league. Bayern has reportedly sent scouts to watch the Brazilian winger, who also has played for Brazil in the u20s and u23 ranks.
His blistering pace and silky touches allow him to go past defenders at will. Bayern’s record with Brazilians has been unpredictable, Breno Borges was shambolic but Douglas Costa was pretty good and looked like a solution to Bayern’s problems until he had a problematic second season under Carlo Ancelotti. So only time will tell whether he will be player who will be donning the red jersey in future or not.
2. Florian Thauvin (Olympique de Marseille)
This season it has been more of a resurgence for the French winger, the 24-year-old was an exciting talent some years ago and hence he was roped in by Newcastle United. Thauvin had a very bad spell at the English club, soon he went down the pecking order and he kept on rotating between Marseille and Newcastle for some time. But finally, he has returned to the French side and has re-kindled himself. With 8 goals and 8 assists, this season in 17 league matches Thauvin has produced a goal or an assist on every 90 minutes of play.
The 24-year-old winger is good on the ball and has a good eye for goal, he owns all those qualities which Bayern want in their wingers, so considering the fact that once in the past a Frenchman from Marseille joined the Bavarians and became a household name for the supporters so why not again?
3. Julian Draxler (Paris Saint Germain)
Draxler was at Schalke for a period of 14 years where he managed his way through the youth ranks to reach the top, before joining Wolfsburg in 2015. Draxler joined PSG in January, but little did he know that players like Neymar and Mbappe are going to join him very soon. The 24-year-old winger has fallen down the pecking order for the manager Unai Emery. With Mbappe and Neymar favoured ahead of him he is currently surplus to requirements for the Paris based side and hence a move out of France will be good for the German winger as World Cup is also knocking at the door.
Clubs like Liverpool and Arsenal have kept regular tabs on him, while Bayern has also been interested. His capabilities are nothing one can doubt, his creativity along with his skills makes him even more dangerous on the flanks. So at the moment, his future is like an unsolved mystery so we will have to wait and see where he ends up.
4. Leon Bailey (Bayer Leverkusen)
This is the breakthrough season for the 20-year old Jamaican winger, Leon Bailey. Bailey is definitely a very exciting prospect as his performances for Bayer Leverkusen has thrown light on him. Clubs like Liverpool and Chelsea are eager to get his signature but Leverkusen has denied offers for the young winger. Born in Kingston, Jamaica, Bailey has an essence of total raw pace and that’s exactly what Bayern must consider while thinking of replacements for Robben and Ribery.
Bailey has made 13 appearances in the league and has snapped up 4 goals along with 5 assists, he also has scored a goal in the only cup match he featured. English Premier League looks like the destination for the Jamaican winger but you never know the Bavarians may soon come up with a hi-jack deal.
5. Yannick Ferreira Carrasco (Atletico de Madrid)
Carrasco is arguably the most proven winger on this list as he has all the qualities required for a winger. His pace and skills have often given nightmares to opposition’s defenders. He is very creative and can set up play when needed, his versatility is another thing that makes him unique. Lately Carrasco is unsettled at Atletico Madrid as the Belgian wanted to visit his family during his time on the sidelines, but Atletico blocked his trip and as a result, the 24-year-old is unhappy with the club. Chelsea has kept a close watch on the Belgian and is very eager to sign him.
The blues have re-ignited their interest to sign Carrasco after last season’s failure. Carrasco may have scored just 3 goals in 11 appearances for Atletico this season but the 24-year-old has already shown his mettle in the previously. So a move out of Madrid looks imminent, but whether his destination will be London (Chelsea), Bavaria (Bayern) or somewhere else is yet to be seen.
