Leipzig held at home by Mainz

RB Leipzig yet again drop crucial points to stay in contention of grasping the title, this time against 14th placed FSV Mainz 05 at Red Bull Arena as they are held 2-2 by a sturdy visiting Mainz side. Leipzig did a double over them last time around but could not replicate the same this time (3-1 H, 3-2 A). Leipzig continue their run on the second spot with 27 points from 15 matches, but narrowing the gap between them and third placed Schalke 04 who have 26 points from as many matches.

RB Leipzig opened the score sheet after just 29 minutes on the clock after Kevin Kampl received a crisp pass from Diego Dumme and made no mistake in dispatching off his right footed shot from right side of the box to the top left corner. Mainz equalised just ten minutes later after Robin Quaison’s right footed effort edged past home goalie Gulacsi. The home side took a late first half lead thanks to Werner who converted a spot kick following a foul by Leon Balogun on Diego Summe. The home side did show some positive football in the second half in order to maintain the 2-1 lead but lost momentum in the final quarter as Mainz pulled one back to level the scores in the 86th minute. A beautifully taken set piece, Emil Berggreen headed home the equaliser after receiving a cross from Alexandru Maxim following a corner.
