Sevilla Through To Round Of 16
Sevilla advance through to the RO16 after pulling out a draw against Maribor
Spanish side Sevilla FC were held 1-1 by Slovenian league leaders NK Maribor at the Ljudski vrt Stadium on the final day of UEFA Champions League group stage matches, which resulted in the automatic qualification of the visiting side through to the Round of 16 in this year’s tournament. Sevilla needed a win to qualify through but Spartak Moscow’s 7-0 loss to Liverpool meant they would advance anyhow. Sevilla are unbeated in their previous three encounters against Maribor (W2 D1) and had scored at least twice in each of their previous meetings.
Maribor starting line-up: – J. Handanovic, M. Milec, J.C Billong, M. Suler, M. Viler, B. Vrhovec, G. Bajde, M. Kabha, A. Pihler (D. Vrsic 79’), D. Bohar (D. Hotic 90’), M. Tavares
Sevilla starting line-up: – S. Rico, G. Mercado (J. Navas 69’), S. Kjaer, C. Lenglet, S. Escudero, M.K. Dehli (Ganso 59’), G. Pizarro, E. Banega, P. Sarabria, W. Ben Yedder (L. Muriel 76’), J. Correa
The home side struck first in the wee hours of the first half, in the 10th minute when Maribor forward Marcos Tavares converted a close range effort after a brilliant execution of set piece. The game saw Sevilla struggle quite a bit after the Spanish side were continuously failing to find the back of the net in such an important fixture. After a disappointing first half which saw no goals from Sevilla, they found their way back in the final quarter of the game when Ganso came off the bench to score the equaliser for the visitors in the 75th minute.
Sevilla would be hoping to find their goal-scoring touch back after a rather indigent outing in front of the net even after having a healthy possession of 72.7%. It was the last of Maribor for this year’s competition as they finished at the bottom of their group but did manage to gain accolades as they drew both the matches against a rather stronger Moscow side.
