Leipzig To Europa While Besiktas Goes Undefeated To RO16
Besiktas advance undefeated as Leipzig qualify for Europa
Besiktas continued their cracking form in the group stages of the UEFA Champions League this season, securing a safe total of 14 points and topping Group G as they edged past the German outfit RB Leipzig 1-2 away from home at the Red Bull Arena, pushing the home side to the Europa League after they finished 3rd after accumulating just 7 points. Besiktas have been splendid this season, as they sit pretty on the second spot in the Turkish League standings, just behind leaders Fenerbahce on goal difference. Leipzig however are having a dream run in the Bundesliga this season, currently in the second position, six points behind league leaders Bayern Munich with 26 points.
RB Leipzig starting line-up: – P. Gulacsi, L. Klostermann, S. Ilsankar, W. Orban (M. Compper 71’), M. Halstenberg (Bernardo 66’), K. Kampl (D. Kaiser 74’), D. Demme, N. Keita, Bruma, J.K. Augustin, T. Werner
Besiktas starting line-up: – T. Zengin, N. Uysal (Adriano 51’), M. Mitrovic, D. Tosic, C. Erkin, G. Medel, O. Ozyakup, J. Lens, A. Talisca, M. Pektemek (O. Cinar 69’), A. Negredo (C. Tosun 80’)
Besiktas were handed an early penalty in the 9th minute as Willi Orban maliciously takes down Jeremain Lens inside the box. Alvaro Negredo scored his first goal in the competition after making no mistake in converting the spot kick. The first half ended 0-1 as both the teams continued to cancel out incoming threats.
The majority of the second half went on goalless even after a dominant display from the home side but things took a turn when home-hero Nabi Keita equalised for Leipzig in the 87th minute. But it was surely Besiktas’ night after Talisca steered home the winner in the 90th minute to seal the game in favour of the visitors.
