Arsenal appoint former Barcelona director of football to Replace Dick Law
Arsenal have confirmed the appointment of FC Barcelona director of football Raul Sanllehi as the club’s new head of football relations following the appointment of Sven Mislintat as chief scout last week.
Mislintat arrived from Borussia Dortmund to replace Steve Rowley, who held the position for 21 years, and spent 35 years at the club, before standing down earlier this month. Dick Law, the American who has been the club’s chief transfer negotiator for eight years, is scaling back his work with Arsenal and has already returned to his homeland. The ongoing overhaul also saw Huss Fahmy, a qualified lawyer who was previously commercial and business affairs director at Team Sky, recruited in June to focus on contracts.
Sanllehi was due to leave Barcelona on Friday but he signed off on Monday after 15 years service at the club and will now move in alongside manager Arsene Wenger.
Sanllehi was a veteran operator for Barcelona, where he was director of football since 2008, keeping his job under the presidencies of Joan Laporta, Sandro Rosell and Josep Maria Bartomeu.
His job at Barcelona had been to complete transfer deals, and he was especially involved in the controversial signing of Neymar from Santos in 2013. Before joining Barcelona Sanllehi had worked for Nike for years.
He will begin work at Arsenal in February and, according to an official statement, “lead future player negotiations and work alongside manager Arsène Wenger, chief executive Ivan Gazidis and contract negotiator Huss Fahmy. He will also represent and support the club with international and domestic governing bodies.”
