Jets vs Victory: A-League Match Preview

0 14

Newcastle Jets faced the biggest test of the new season last weekend when they paid a visit to reigning Hyundai A-League champions Sydney FC. They fell to a disappointing, but nevertheless respectable 2-1 defeat to the champions, but that loss takes nothing away from their fantastic start to the season.

The Jets, despite missing out on the A-League playoffs for six years in a row, started that weekend at the summit of the table, and even after their loss they are 2nd in the table with only two points between them and Sydney FC.

It was the hosts’ first defeat of the season, and four of their seven games have ended in victory thanks to their excellent and rejuvenated attacking lineup. They have scored a league high 16 goals this season, with summer signing Roy O’Donovan getting seven of those goals as well. Backing the former Central Coast Mariners’ striker to score again on Thursday looks a great choice for our anytime goalscorer predictions.

Melbourne Victory have been the polar opposite to Newcastle Jets this season. The visitors were competing at the top of the table again last season, but they failed to win their opening six games this season and only managed to break that streak last weekend. This puts them 6th in the table and already nine points adrift of the leaders.

Melbourne Victory have won four, drawn one, and lost two of their last seven meetings with Newcastle Jets.

Newcastle Jets have scored in 86% of their Hyundai A-League games this season, keeping a clean sheet just 14% of the time. Melbourne Victory have also scored in 86% of their league matches, but again have only kept a clean sheet in 14% of their games.

Team News:

Newcastle Jets~

Striker Ronald Vargas is the only injury concern for Newcastle Jets.

Melbourne Victory~

Melbourne Victory are still without centre back James Donachie.

It’s a seeming inability to finish games off that’s been the cause of their problems. They have conceded in six of their seven league games and scored in all but one of them, so it’s unlikely they can keep a clean sheet against the top scorers in the league on Thursday.

Newcastle Jets’ defence is hardly solid though. They have managed just a single clean sheet this season, so backing Both Teams to Score looks like a great idea. In the end Newcastle Jets’ high confidence should be enough to get them the win, so we’re backing a 2-1 correct score predictions as well.
