In 2007 Ignazio’s loan spell ended, as did the contract with Milan, and he became a free agent. Empoli F.C. seized the opportunity and acquired Abate for 900 thousand euros. During the 2007/08 season, Abate was the first-choice fullback, rarely missing the games. At Empoli, he made 24 appearances and scored 1 goal.
In 2008 Ignazio continued his career at Torino F.C., and appeared in 25 games.
In 2009 A.C. Milan reclaimed Abate and put him in the team roster. Ignazio was eager to play for his alma mater and a top Italian club. After slow start in debut matches, Abate was promoted to a regular right back by Milan head coach. To date, Abate has made over 200 appearances for the club.
