Brisbane Roar vs Central Coast Mariners: All you need to know about this A-League match
It’s safe to say that Brisbane Roar haven’t had an ideal start to the season, but things did take a little upturn last weekend in extraordinary circumstances. They went into their away game with Wellington Phoenix having lost their opening three games in the Hyundai A-League, and they looked well on course for their 4th consecutive defeat as they went 3-0 down within 20 minutes. Somehow they recovered though, and eventually pulled it back to 3-3 with eight minutes remaining to take their first point of the season.
That will certainly have felt like a point gained for Roar, but it doesn’t mask the fact that they’ve been well below par this season. One point from a possible 12 isn’t good enough if they want to be making the playoffs, but they will be expecting to get their first win on Sunday.
That’s because they come up against the often terrible Central Coast Mariners. The visitors have managed to take two draws from their opening four games, but the fact they have shipped ten goals in these games highlights their massive defensive vulnerabilities.
Mariners’ are one of the perennial strugglers in the A-League, and as such they have won just one of their last 11 away games in the league. Eight of these have ended in defeat, and whilst they have found the net in seven of them they have conceded 22 at the other end. Five of these came against Brisbane Roar towards the end of last season as well, so things don’t bode well for them.
One man they will have to watch out for is 38 year old Italian striker Massimo Maccarone. The veteran joined Brisbane Roar in the off-season and has scored three goals in his opening four games, including two last weekend. Backing him to find the net against the terrible Central Coast defence could be a wise move.

Central Coast Mariners~
Centre back Kye Rowles is the visitors’ only injury concern coming into this game.
As we’ve already mentioned, Brisbane Roar’s back line is nothing to write home about either. They have kept just two clean sheets in their last 11 home games in the A-League, scoring in ten of them. As you would expect, both of these sides have been involved in their fair share of goalfests, with three of both teams’ four league matches this season seeing at least three goals. All things considered, backing Over 2.5 Goals and Both Teams to Score looks a great choice alongside a 3-1 win for Brisbane Roar.
