Brighton settle for a point against Southampton
Brighton and Hove Albion came from behind to salvage a point at the Amex stadium from their southcoast showdown after Southampton had taken the lead.
Steven Davis gave saints the lead just minutes into kickoff. James Ward Prowse’s free kick struck the woodwork only for the ball to fall for Davis who headed home from 6 yards .
Sofiane Boufal , recalled into the saints’ starting 11 after his scintillating solo goal last week , won the free kick just outside the D box earlier.
The early goal prompted response from the home side who had just scored 5 goals in their opening home matches. Chances were few and far in the first half for both sides.
Brighton had their first big opportunity of the first half whenJose Izquierdo wiped in a high cross towards far post only for Anthony knockeart to pass it across the goal.
But Brighton managed to keep the ball in play and this time knockeart delivered a delicious ball only for Shane Duffy to head it over the bar. That was the best spell of a rather dizzy first half.
Brighton managed to haul themselves level six minutes after the interval, with summer signing Pascal Gross once again the architect.
The German midfielder has now either scored or made eight of Brighton’s 10 goals this season after his deep cross found Murray at the far post.
Murray out-jumped full-back Cedric Soares to thump in a header which Saints keeper Fraser Forster, who was perhaps a little slow getting across his goal, got a hand to but could not keep out.
Brighton went in search of a winner, but Izquierdo’s fierce drive was blocked by Virgil van Dijk and a low cross from Knockaert was skied by Duffy.
