Valverde jokes about Messi taking glucose tablet as the talisman reaches another milestone
Barcelona coach Ernesto Valverde jokingly admitted that he hopes Messi to score 200 goals after Barcelona’s talisman chalked up another record as he scored for 100th time in European competitions from a free-kick in the 3-1 win against Olympiakos in Champions League on Wednesday. He also set up the third goal assisting Digne.
“I hope he reaches 200 goals this season!” Valverde said when asked about Messi’s milestone.
“His numbers validate what we see everyday. He is beating statistics that seemed impossible. He has been doing it from a long time now, constantly breaking barriers.”
But there was a moment in the first half which escaped the attention of many viewers, where the Barcelona number 10 dug into his socks and took out a pill and put it in his mouth.
According to Radio Catalunya’s Richard Torquemada,Messi was chewing on glucose tablet to give himself energy boost. He claimed it was the best time to take the tablet as “before the first 15 minutes of physical effort is when the muscles are most receptive.”
“I don’t know if if he took a glucose tablet,” said the Barcelona boss.”If it made him score a goal, then he should take a load of them…But I do know the players do take glucose.
It is normal for athletes to take glucose tablets, specially during tough schedule involving club and national duty, but unusual during the game.Mostly they are taken after warm up or before the game.
