Barcelona Scout 2 Premier League Forwards During Busy Week of Champions League Action
Barcelona technical secretary Robert Fernandez has been a busy man this week if reports are to be believed, with trips to Madrid and Lisbon on Tuesday and Wednesday respectively to take a closer look at two potential attacking targets currently with Premier League clubs.
With Barça needing a new forward, Mundo Deportivo (MD) reports that Fernandez was in attendance at the Bernabeu this week to watch Tottenham star Harry Kane in action.
The England international, who has won the Premier League Golden Boot in each of the last two seasons, is also apparently a target for Real Madrid. Prising him away might be difficult, though, with suggestions that Spurs value him at more than the €222m Neymar was sold for.
Barça brought in Ousmane Demebele for €105m in the wake of Neymar’s move to Paris Saint-Germain, but the French international, who won’t be seen again until the New Year as a result of injury, isn’t the prolific goalscorer that Neymar was and could be.
Just 24 hours after sitting in the stands in Madrid, Fernandez was in Portugal after catching a flight to Lisbon where he watched Benfica host Manchester United.
MD’s report suggests that the subject of that visit was Anthony Martial, a player who has been in resurgent form this season, even if he hasn’t been a regular starter in Jose Mourinho’s side.
Martial was a substitute once more at the Estadio da Luz, a game which United won 1-0 as a result of a goalkeeping error, but he replaced goalscorer Marcus Rashford in the closing stages.
Martial was signed from Monaco in 2015 for a package worth a total of €80m after various add-ons and bonuses had been taken into account. He finished his debut season as the club’s top scorer and is now returning to his best form after a difficult second campaign in 2016/17.
