Chelsea and Manchester City to go head-to-head for Bertrand
Manchester City and Chelsea are bracing for a January tug-of-war over Ryan Bertrand.
Bertrand, 28, has been a reliable figure in Southampton’s left back position. The England international was on the radar of Manchester City last summer as City were going through a rebuilding process but the deal was never materialised.
Rumours linking Bertrand to City have started floating again as City are in need of a left-back after Benjamin Mendy’s long-term injury. Guardiola has been forced to deploy Danilo and even midfielder Fabian Delph at the left back position. Although they have done a tremendous job so far, they are not proper left backs.
Now, according to reports in England, English giants Chelsea are set to go head-to-head with Manchester City to secure Bertrand’s signature in January. Saints boss Mauricio Pellegrino has no desire to sell Bertrand but a £30m offer might tempt him to give a green signal to the deal.
Even for Bertrand, a transfer to a top team would be fascinating considering World Cup next year. Bertrand recently played for the Three Lions against Slovenia but his place could be in danger once Danny Rose returns to the scene. In that scenario, a couple of strong performances in Premier League and Champions League might give him the nod over Rose.
The former Chelsea academy graduate is contracted to the St Mary’s based club until 2021.
