Barcelona to beat Liverpool for Virgil Van Dijk
Virgil Van Dijk is set for a shock move to Nou Camp snubbing Liverpool’s interest.
Virgil Van Dijk transfer saga has been one of the most exciting transfer events of the recently concluded summer transfer window. Van Dijk, 26, was hell bent on joining Liverpool and Liverpool were keen to make the deal happen as soon as possible. Klopp was even ready to pay £50m to secure the Dutch defender’s services. But Southampton blocked the move.
The Saints even approached FA over Liverpool’s illegal tapping up of Van Dijk which forced the Merseyside club to release an official apology to Southampton. Van Dijk didn’t take the matter lightly as he abandoned training to force through a move to Liverpool inspite of strong interest from Chelsea and Manchester City. In the end, Southampton were able to resist any temptation and keep the Dutch international centre-back at the St Mary’s Stadium.
Liverpool were expected to return with another bid in the next transfer window but they might face stiff competition as The Mirror reports La Liga giants Barcelona are set to beat Liverpool for Van Dijk’s signature. Catalan scouts were recently seen taking a close look at Van Dijk during Netherlands’ match against Sweden.
Barcelona are willing to meet Southampton’s demand and will pay Van Dijk the exact similar wage Liverpool are offering. Even for Southampton, a sale to Barcelona makes more sense considering Liverpool are their Premier League rivals.
Barcelona and Liverpool have already had a bitter relationship after Philippe Coutinho transfer fiasco. Van Dijk transfer saga would surely add a new dimension to that.
