Ralf Rangnick: “The Kylian Mbappé deal was as good as sealed”
In a sensational revelation, RB Leipzig’s sporting director Ralf Rangnick has revealed that the club nearly signed Kylian Mbappé from Monaco back in 2015.
Back then, Leipzig were playing in the 2.Bundesliga and the deal fell through owing to uncertainty over the managerial appointment following the resignation of Alexander Zorniger.
Speaking to Bild, Rangnick said: “The Kylian Mbappé deal was as good as sealed. The problem back then was that we just separated from coach Alexander Zorniger just after the 2015 winter break. We didn’t know who’s going be the coach.
“His father told me that if I’m sure I’ll be coaching the team he’ll put his trust over the boy with me. It was February and I still couldn’t give him an answer,” the 59-year-old further added.
That season, Leipzig would go on to earn promotion to the Bundesliga.
