Ex-Napoli director confirms Manchester United’s interest on star player
Manchester United are actively pursuing Belgium forward Dries Mertens.
After a series of dismal seasons, Manchester United might have finally found the right balance in the team as well as in the hotseat. Jose Mourinho is taking the Red Devils back to their glory times and that’s pretty much evident from their opening couple of matches. One of the favorites to win the title this time, Mourinho knows his team can’t be too complacent as Manchester City and Chelsea are bound to give them serious run for their money. So, Mourinho wants to strengthen his forward line with the addition of Napoli forward Dries Mertens as per reports are concerned.
Former Napoli Sporting Director Pierpaolo Marino has claimed that the Red Devils are after Mertens and could even snap him up in January for as little as £25m thanks to the release clause in his contract.
In an interview with Tuttosport, Marino said:
“Manchester United are following Mertens very closely.”
“He was an underestimated player until he played as a striker, now that he is a ‘real No.9’ he is kept under the eye of big clubs, because the €28 million clause a a low price, even if he’s 30 years old.”
Inspite of his age, the 30-year-old hitman scored a staggering 34 goals last season which prompted the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United to enquire about him this summer but nothing was materialised back then. He continued his fine form in this season too netting 7 times in as many games. Manchester United fans are hoping Mourinho will be second time lucky in the pursuit of Mertens who is contracted to the Stadio San Paolo based club until 2020
