Bayern eyeing auspicious swoop for goalie
Bayern Munich look set to delve deep into the transfer market for a top class goalkeeper
German giants Bayern Munich undoubtedly have the best goalie of current generation. German international Manuel Neuer is tall, commanding, a perfect sweeper-keeper in a nutshell. Still at 31, age has failed to put any effect on him and he is constantly raising the bar every passing day. But his long term injury, probably until March, has exposed a big deficiency in Bayern squad.
Although Neuer’s understudy Sven Ulreich has done nothing wrong in recent matches, to be honest he is no Manuel Neuer. Bayern are feeling the heat of missing a leader between the sticks and that might haunt them throughout the season. Reports are coming out that the Bavarian giants are planning to swoop for a big name goalkeeper in case Neuer fails to fully recover from his fractured foot.
According to Football Italia, 18-year-old AC Milan goalkeeper Gianluigi Donnarumma is top of the Bayern’s wishlist. Donnarumma has had some issues with Milan board before the season and rejected Milan’s contract extension offer. He and his agent Mino Raiola faced much hatred from Milan fans for their action towards the club but in the end Donnarumma put pen to paper to a new four-year-deal. But things are not totally under control as reports have emerged that the Italian international may leave the club next summer if Milan fail to qualify for the Champions League and that could leave the door open for a move to the Allianz Arena.
Another keeper Munich are closely monitoring is Marc-Andre ter Stegen. It will be a tempting offer for Ter Stegen to return to his homeland but considering the fact he is the undisputed number 1 at the Camp Nou and well-settled there, Bayern will find it very difficult to prise him away from Barcelona.
There is a bigger risk lying in case Bayern succeed in pursuing Donnarumma or Ter Stegen. If Neuer remains fully fit, no doubt he will be the one to be handed the job. It’s hard to imagine any of the 2 big names agrees to become Neuer’s deputy. Bayern are fully aware of the fact that such a situation may arise in case they add another top class goalie and they will find it difficult to sign someone of this calibre at the midseason. So, they might also try their luck in Spain as Athetic Bilbao shot stopper Kepa Arrizabalaga seems to be another attractive option for them.
