Cannavaro hails exceptional Slovak
World cup winning Italy captain Fabio Cannavaro has applauded Marek Hamsik for reaching within the distance of Maradona’s record.
Napoli captain Marek Hamsik is a burning example of how loyalty wins over money. Transferred to Napoli from Brescia in 2007 for £5m, Hamsik has been in the Stadio San Paolo till now rejecting a host of lucrative offers from the likes of Chelsea, Manchester United, Juventus, AC Milan etc.
The 30-year-old attacking midfielder’s love towards Napoli is set to be paid off as he is very close on becoming the club’s all time highest goalscorer surpassing Argentinian legend Diego Maradona. Maradona netted 115 goals for Napoli in 259 matches whereas Hamsik is one goal shy of Maradona’s record playing 463 matches.
World Cup winning Italy captain and former Ballon d’Or winner Fabio Cannavaro, who was a product of Napoli’s academy and played 3 years for them, hailed Hamsik’s “exceptional” achievement.
In an interview with Football Italia, Cannavaro told :
“Marek is a professional and an exceptional lad.”
“He’s an atypical defender, because he gets almost as many goals as a striker. Maradona’s record is a milestone he deserves for the professionalism he’s demonstrated over these years.
“It’s normal that the comparisons don’t stand up, but Marek has established himself in silence over these years, even when he wasn’t treated well.
“He’s always worked and given the maximum. At the end of a career, the numbers speak for you and Marek’s are very good.”
