PSG goalkeeper Alphonse Areola is attracting serious interest from Newcastle United.

The 24-year-old Frenchman has surpassed Kevin Trapp as the first choice goalie this season. He justified his selection with a string of fine performances both in the Ligue 1 and in the Champions League which includes a heroic performance against Bayern Munich.

Newcastle boss Rafael Benitez has made Rob Elliot his first choice goalie this season. Although Elliot has so far impressed Benitez, the boss knows Areola would be a step above Elliot and according to France Football, he is actively trying to make a deal happen in January.

Areola is currently the lowest paid player in PSG squad and his current contract is set to run down in 2019. Although PSG are eager to tie him down to a new deal with improved conditions, Newcastle might have got some kind of encouragement from Areola’s side as the Frenchman rejected an initial contract extension offer from PSG.

Juventus are also keeping close tabs on Areola’s situation as they are in search of a long-term replacement of Buffon. Even if Areola decides to leave Parc des Princes, he is highly unlikely to land up in St. James Park as many high profile clubs would line up to secure his services.
