Match Preview : Spain vs Albania World Cup Qualifier

0 69

Spain will host Albania in the midst of a huge crisis of the Catalan independent referendum.

The match, however, has a significant importance for the hosts who could book their place at the World Cup in Russia in case of a victory on Friday evening at Estadio Jose Rico Perez in Alicante.

Should they win, La Roja will all but ensure qualification for the World Cup in Russia next summer. All signals point to a comfortable Spain win on Friday night.

At home and against fairly weak opposition – even without the likes of Alvaro Morata and Diego Costa – we’re expecting goals. In their last match they scored eight goals away at Liechtenstein.

Spain have not lost a home match in almost 11 years, and have only drawn four times in that period. It would take a miracle for Albania to take anything here, even though they can still reach the play-offs to qualify for the World Cup.

Their only real glimmer of hope is the fact that Spain have a few injury problems, with Dani Carvajal, Andres Iniesta and Alvaro Morata all having pulled out of the squad in the last few days.

Team News :

Spain :

Spain have a few injury concerns, with Alvaro Morata, Dani Carvajal and Andres Iniesta all pulling out of the squad due to injury. Aritz Aduriz, Alvaro Odriozola and Jonathan Viera were called up in their absence.

Julen Lopetegui had to abandon Monday’s training after only 20 minutes as raged fans were furious with Gerard Pique who will likely not wear the Spanish national team’s shirt ever again.

The whole situation caused by the political crisis will clearly affect players on the pitch.
As for the form, Lopetegui (who is a Basque) can be thrilled with the action his side had in September with demolishing wins over Italy and Liechtenstein.

Albania :

Albania still have theoretical chances of overtaking Italy in the second position, but they would need a real miracle to get there.

They are enjoying a solid form as well after getting two wins and a draw in last three games (with Israel, Liechtenstein and FYR Macedonia).

Spain host Albania at the Estadio Rico Perez in Alicante on Friday night. La Roja won the reverse fixture 2-0 a year ago and are yet to lose under manager Julen Lopetegui.

Spain :

Spain are in great form under Lopetegui as mentioned above. The 2010 World Cup champions are unbeaten in 12 matches since he took over last year.

Albania :

Albania’s form has picked up after a run of five successive defeats earlier in the year. Their 3-0 win away at Israel back in June was particularly impressive.

The head-to-head comparison makes grim reading for Albania fans. Spain have won 6 out of 6 previous meetings, with everything pointing to win number 7 on Friday night.
