Match Preview : England vs Slovenia World Cup Qualifier

0 36

An expectant Wembley will be keen to see England wrap up World Cup qualification on Thursday evening.

Slovenia will be no pushovers and held England to a 0-0 draw earlier on in the campaign.

With the likes of Harry Kane, Marcus Rashford and Raheem Sterling all firing in the Premier League, Gareth Southgate’s side should have too much for Slovenia.

The task is very simple for England: Beat Slovenia at Wembley on Thursday night and World Cup qualification is assured.

Whilst England would be confident of beating Lithuania away on Sunday night, there should not really be a need to go into the final game under pressure.

With Slovakia playing Scotland at the same time, England could conceivably also qualify for the World Cup with a draw versus Slovenia.

It might not always have been the case in recent years, but England currently have some attacking players that should strike fear into the opposition.

Even without Dele Alli, a front three of Harry Kane, Raheem Sterling and Marcus Rashford is impressive.

Kane comes into this match off the back of scoring 13 for club and country in September. Sterling and Rashford have played key roles for Manchester City and Manchester United respectively this season.

Team News :

England :

Dele Alli misses the match through suspension for showing his middle finger to Kyle Walker in England’s last game.
On Monday, Phil Jones and Fabian Delph pulled out of the England squad due to injury.

Tottenham midfielder Harry Winks was called up but it would be a surprise if he was to play any part in the two matches.

Slovenia :

Slovenia’s form has been patchy of late. They were narrow 1-0 losers to both Slovakia and Scotland over the past year.

It is likely these two results that will prevent Slovenia from grabbing an unlikely World Cup qualifying play-off spot.

In October last year, Slovenia held England to a 0-0 draw in Ljubljana.
Harry Kane and Raheem Sterling missed that match completely. Marcus Rashford played the final eight minutes.

In Jan Oblak, Slovenia are lucky to have one of the best goalkeepers in the world.

The England squad v Slovenia :

Goalkeepers: Joe Hart (West Ham, on loan from Manchester City), Fraser Forster (Southampton), Jack Butland (Stoke), Jordan Pickford (Everton)

Defence: Ryan Bertrand (Southampton), Aaron Cresswell (West Ham), Gary Cahill (Chelsea), Harry Maguire (Leicester), John Stones (Manchester City), Michael Keane (Everton), Chris Smalling (Manchester United), Kyle Walker (Manchester City), Kieran Trippier (Tottenham)

Midfield: Eric Dier (Tottenham), Harry Winks (Tottenham), Jake Livermore (West Brom), Jordan Henderson (Liverpool), Raheem Sterling (Manchester City), Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain (Liverpool), Jesse Lingard (Manchester United), Dele Alli (Tottenham)

Attack: Marcus Rashford (Manchester United), Harry Kane (Tottenham), Jermain Defoe (Bournemouth), Daniel Sturridge (Liverpool).

Head to Head:

The draw has put England and Slovenia together in the second subsequent campaign as they played in other in EURO 2016 qualies (England had a perfect record of ten wins in ten matches there).

The Three Lions won each of their previous four meetings with the Slovenians, but the first clash in this term saw this trend coming to an end as Slovenia managed a goalless draw in front of their fans back in October last year.

England vs Slovenia: Prediction

Slovenia have failed to find the back of the net in each of their last three outings on the road and we can hardly see them on target on Thursday against England who have kept a clean sheet in six of their eight qualifying fixtures in this campaign.
