South Korean Maestro Showing It On The Big Stage
Nowadays we talk about many players with great ability but they remain under appreciated and we term them as “underrated”.In world football we have many of those unrecognized players but today I will be talking about one of the most prolific one in recent years.
Born in Chucheon in South Korea he came up through the ranks of FC Seoul. Yes,he is none other than Tottenham superstar Son Heung-min. One of the most sharp players in Premier League right now. As a teenager he moved to Hamburger SV at the age of 16 and continued his development in the youth system of the club,he came through the ranks and made his senior debut for Hamburg in 2010 pre-season scoring against Chelsea. Son was out injured for two months after the Chelsea game. He returned on 30 October,2010 and scored his first league goal against 1. FC Köln which made him the youngest goal-scorer for Hamburg in Bundesliga. Son was 18 years old at that time.
Since then there was no stopping for the South Korean. In the following season he scored five goals in thirty appearances. Following the club’s transfer activities in the summer of 2012-13 season which saw Mladen Petrić and Paolo Guerrero move to Fulham and Corinthians respectively, then Hamburg manager,Thorsten Fink chose to give Son a starting place in the team. This proved to be an excellent decision as Son enjoyed his breakthrough season with 12 goals and 2 assists. Following his impressive season Bayer Leverkusen broke their bank and signed Son for a then club-record fee €10 million on 13 June,2013.
He started his Leverkusen career with a bang by scoring 3 in 3 exhibition matches during the 2013-14 pre-season.In his debut season for Leverkusen he scored a hat trick against his former club Hamburg in a dramatic 5-3 win. He ended his season with 12 goals and 4 assists in 43 appearances. He continued his blistering form in the 2014-15 season finding the net 17 times in 42 appearances and setting up another two in the process.
His abilities was not unnoticed by other European clubs but Premier League giants Tottenham Hotspurs won the race for South Korean maestro. Son moved to Tottemham for a fee that is believed to be around €22 and became the most expensive Asian footballer of all time. But in his debut season he did not reach those heights as he was used as an squad rotation player.Despite this he ended the 2015-16 season with & goals and 5 assists in all competition.
2016-17 season was the real test for himself as a season proving his worth. Before the season he reportedly aske Spur’s manager Mauricio Pochettino for permission to leave Tottenham in a bid to play more first team football but instead was given a chance to fight for his play.He proved every bit of his manager’s right as he set the Premier League on fire.He scored 18 times and racked 6 assists in the 2016-17 season. He got two Player of the Month Award(Ocotber&April) becoming the first Asian to win this award.
Son got his first International cap in 2010 and has been prolific for his nation scoring 17 time in 57 appearances. He started this season in style after scoring in Tottenham’s first Champions League match against Borussia Dortmund.
Despite his mind-blowing scoring ability he is deprived of the appreciation he deserves but it will not be long since he gets much more applaud that he is getting now. With not a single doubt he is currently the best South Korean player now.I hope he will build on his magical football to establish himself as an Asian legend in the Premier League.
