Premier League clubs eyeing a move for Dries Mertens
Premier League club Arsenal FC reportedly wants to sign Belgian winger, Dries Mertens.
Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger is reportedly looking for a replacement for Chilean forward Alexis Sanchez who is most likely to leave the Emirates stadium soon. According to Calciomercato.com was on Arsene Wenger’s transfer list that included the likes of Juan Cuadrado of Juventus FC and Riyad Mahrez of Leicester City.
Mertens extended his contract at Napoli last May; this contract extension will see him stay at Naples till 2020. But The Gunners could return next summer and complete the purchase of Mertens for a transfer fee of just 30 million. Mertens has been playing tremendously well in the 2016-17 season and a 30 million fee will definitely be a bargain for Wenger’s team. The 30 year old has scored a total of 34 goals in 40 Serie A matches since the start of last season.
The Sun has also reported that Sanchez will leave the club when his contract eventually expires at the end of the season and Mertens would be a potential replacement for the Chilean, due to both of them operating so well from the wing. The former PSV Eindhoven could play as a false number 9 or even at different wings, considering how Arsene Wenger lines up his starting XI. Much like Arsenal FC, Manchester United are also looking keeping a close eye on Mertens. United failed to sign Ivan Perisic from Inter Milan in the last transfer window, but now have turned their attention towards another Serie A player that is Mertens. However, with the Belgian recently extending his contract at Napoli it will be very hard for these Premier League clubs to get the deal done.
