Match Review: FC Augsburg vs RB Leipzig
2017 Bundesliga runner-up RB Leipzig’s pursuit to replicate previous year’s heroics seemed to have taken a major setback after the Red Bull owned franchise suffered it’s second defeat in five matches including a 2-2 draw at home against Mönchengladbach. They are currently languishing at the 8th spot on the league table.
Leipzig manager, Ralph Hasenhüttl was seen furious on the sidelines after his side were completely dominated away from home by a rejuvenated Augsburg side. The same Augsburg side had finished 13th last season. Early strike from Austrian playmaker Michael Gregoritsch was enough to seal 3 points for the home side. Assisted by fellow team-mate Alfred Finnbogason, Gregoritsch placed a perfect left footed shot from the centre of the box to the high centre of the goal. The game could produce no other vital break-through moment as Leipzig couldn’t capitalize on their good possession hold. Leipzig attempted a total of fourteen shots in response to Augsburg’s eleven. The game saw a total of 4 yellow cards being shown to Moravek( FC Aug 50’), Sabitzer( RBL 52’), Kampl( RBL 77’) and Baier( FC Aug 78’).
This game marked the 4th outing in which Leipzig forward Yussuf Poulsen couldn’t find the back of the net while his counterpart Timo Werner has been in splendid form, already netting 4 times in 5 matches he has played. It would be utmost crucial for all the other Leipzig playmakers to step up their game-play and play for complete points and give other teams a run for their money. The team should really be hungry for points now if they truly want to be considered as a strong force in Germany and eventually in Europe. They have already drawn 1-1 at home against Monaco on the opening day of the UEFA Champions League. Leipzigs’s next league match is on 23rd of September when they welcome Eintracht to the Red Bull Arena.
