RB leipzig 2: Borussia Monchengladbach 2
Leipzig’s playing style is nothing new by now but that does not make it any less of a joy to watch. Ralph Hasenhüttl’s men employed their familiar fast-paced, high-pressing game and put their visitors on the back foot right from the off. They took a deserved lead through a smart Timo Werner finish, only to be pegged back moments later when Thorgan Hazard converted from the penalty spot. However, Leipzig restored their lead before the break when Naby Keita’s threaded pass found Jean-Kevin Augustin on the edge of the box, and the summer signing made no mistake.Leipzig appeared to be in control after the break and had a couple of chances to extend their lead before Gladbach captain Lars Stindl capitalised on a defensive mix-up to lash in a superb strike from distance. However, despite having an extra man the Foals were unable to press their advantage, leaving both sides to settle for a point.

Kai Havertz and Karim Bellarabi had already gone close when a rampant Leverkusen took a deserved lead, courtesy of an unstoppable long-range strike from Volland. Freiburg could not get out of their own half as Panagiotis Retsos went within a whisker of a debut goal, before Charles Aranguiz crashed in the sweetest of volleys for Bayer’s second. Alexander Schwolow did well to keep out Havertz, but was powerless to prevent Volland sliding in Lars Bender’s teasing right-wing cross to extend the hosts’ advantage.
It should have got better for Freiburg before it got worse as Marco Terrazzino spurned a glorious opening to reduce the arrears early in the second half. It did not take Bayer long to reassert their authority on the contest, though, with the lively Bellarabi twice going close to a fourth. Volland thought he had completed his hat-trick with 20 minutes to go, but the goal was chalked off following consultation with Video Assist. Julian Brandt got in on the act to complete the whitewash, leaving Freiburg still searching for their first win of the 2017/18 Bundesliga season.
