East Bengal Thrashed Tollygunge Agragami with a 5-0 margin ahead of the Mega Derby

Willis Plaza’s hat trick and goals from Nikhil Pujari and Landanmawaia Ralte helped East Bengal to win against Tollygunge Agragami with an emphatic 5-0 margin in a convincing manner. With this win East Bengal levelled the points with Mohun Bagan but East Bengal will now be at the top of the League table. Now, East Bengal just need a draw against their arch rival Mohun Bagan in the Mega Derby on Sunday at Siliguri to win the Kolkata Premier League for the eighth time in a row.

Tollygunge Agragami was not a team to be ignored so easily as the team consisted of several veteran experienced players like Deepak Mondal, Vashum, Phool Chand, Laltu Hembram and Goutam Kujur. They have two quality foreigners too in their teams – Chika Wali and Beekay Bawar and their coach Subhash Bhowmick had fielded the team in 4-5-1 formation.

East Bengal coach Khalid Jamil made slight changes in the first XI of East Bengal from the line up he started against Mohammedan Sporting in the previous match. Gurwinder Singh was chosen over Mitchell in the heart of the defense to pair up with Arnab Mondal. Tonmoy Ghosh came in place of Samad Ali Mullick who was suspended for this match. Nikhil Pujari and Gabriel were also present in the starting line up in place of Brandon and Jobby Justin respectively in this match.

Tollygunge Agragami did not give up too much early and they had got few chances also in the first few minutes of the match. Vashum was brilliant for them in this period of match. But East Bengal got the lead in the lead at 26th minute of the match when Willis Plaza headed the ball to the goal from Mohammed Rafique’s corner kick. The first half had ended with only one goal for East Bengal. The ground was wet and heavy. The players were not smooth in their movements and the attacks of East Bengal were not enough to break the Tollygunge defense once again in the first half and at the dying moments of the half Ralte’s shot had struck the post and came back.

Khalid Jamil’s side were dedicated to increase the goal difference ahead of the Mega Derby and at 50th minute in the second half, Willis Plaza doubled the lead for East Bengal with a brilliant individual skill by dribbling both Deepak Mondal and Chika Wali in the Tollygunge defense. At 57th minute Cavin Lobo took the field in place of Gabriel Fernandes who was unable to make a mark in this match. Veteran player Antoni Soren was also brought by Subhas Bhowmick to provide more attacking threats on the other side. But Willis Plaza completed his hattrick through a brilliant pass from Chullova from the left flank. Al Amna was taken off at 68th minute to avoid injuries ahead of the Mega Derby and replaced by Surabuddin Mullick. East Bengal’s attacking threats were increasing. Ralte missed two clear chances in this period. Willis Plaza was replaced by Jobby Justin to give him adequate rest ahead of the big match. At 81st minute Nikhil Pujari increased the margin for East Bengal when he had just to push the ball towards the goal from the pass of the substitute Jobby Justin. Some moments later, Ralte scored from a brilliant back header from the cross of Mohammed Rafique and sealed a 5-0 win for East Bengal. Goutam Kujur was shown the second yellow card and had been given the marching order in the stoppage time of the second half.

East Bengal will now be boosted up with confidence after winning with such a big margin. Now they will play against their arch rival Mohun Bagan on Sunday at Siliguri and a draw in that match will be enough for the Red and Gold Brigade to create a new history in the Kolkata Premier League.
