Two late own goals helped Paris Saint-Germain maintain their 100 per cent record in Ligue 1
PSG 2 [Marcelo 76’ (OG), Morel 86’ (OG)] – 0 Lyon
On Sunday evening Paris Saint Germain looked to maintain their 100% record in the Ligue 1 season, when they played Olympique Lyonnais.
As usual the hosts were expected to win the game comfortably, as they lined up the trio of Neymar Jr, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe in their attack. But that was not the case, as PSG found it really hard to break down the Lyon defense.
Lyon started the bright and had one penalty appeal turned down inside the first five minutes of the match, the very next minute Memphis Depay’s shot was saved by Areola.
PSG’s first big chance of the match came in the 15th minute, when Neymar’s corner almost went it only for Lopes to keep it out. PSG had two more big chances in the match, the first one was kept out by Lopes who rushed out his box and swept the ball away. The second chance fell for Neymar right before the end of the half, who shot the ball straight towards Lopes and was denied by the Lyon keeper.
A frustrating half for PSG came to an end as the score remained 0-0 at the break.
The Parisians started the second half on the attack, as on the 56th minute Neymar’s free kick was saved in tremendous fashion by Lopes. 10 minutes later Lyon had the chance to get the lead but a header was kept off the line by Thaigo Silva, only for Ndombele who took a shot from 18 yards out and rattled the crossbar.
PSG finally had the breakthrough in the 76th minute, when Lo Celso’s cross was met by Cavani and was then deflected off Lyon defender Marcelo who turned the ball into his own net. A minute later PSG earned themselves a penalty when Mbappe was taken down inside the box, up stepped Edinson Cavani whose attempt was kept out by Lopes.
In the 86th minute of the match, PSG sealed the victory when Neymar played through Mbappe, Lopes saved the French striker’s shot but once again the ball was deflected off another Lyon defender, this time Jeremy Morel as PSG sealed a 2-0 win.
An unconvincing victory for PSG nonetheless, who had to rely on two own goals for a win.
