An elegant Sporting side ramped down Greek Champions in a 5 goal thriller
Olympiakos almost pulled up a stunning comeback but could not edge out the one goal margin paved by the Portuguese side, Sporting in the first half. The game was a goal fest as it behold the desperation showed by the either side to register first three points on the board of Group D, the group where two heavyweights are placed namely Barcelona and Juventus. Therefore both sides are optimum to fight for the deserved third place which will keep them in the European race.
With that mentality a show was set in the Olympiakos arena with fans chanting out the club’s praising song. Sporting CP were placed at the last in the previous venture and so this time a change was required. This time Sporting introduced attacking masterclass against the Greek and completely back footed them in the opening half by triple hit on the opposition net.
The man in the making was the former CSKA Moskva player, the veteran Seydou Doumbia. He rifled the first strike on target of the game inside 70 seconds causing havoc in the defense and giving his side the upper hand very early in the game. Doumbia had often proved to be a threat in the opposition penalty area and had bolstered this competition arriving with famous goals.
Sporting could have introduced more after that but they were unlucky of hitting the crossbar twice in the span of two minutes. But they did not had to wait long to find the back of the net once more. Portuguese rising star Gelson Martins clinched a pass from the goalscorer Doumbia after a breakage in the counter attack of the home side and bamboozled his marker, finishing exclusively past Kapino. Portuguese National coach Fernando Santos should keep a sharp eye on him as he may turn into a next big prospect of Portugal.
The wake of these two goals sucked all the energy from Olympiakos as Sporting found it easy to add a third before the interval. After some descent chances squandered by the away side, Sebastian Coates through ball was latched onto by Fernandes and with no one to challenge him he hopefully chiped over stranded Kapino to make it 3-0 before the break.
Little was expected from Olympiakos in the second half after all that attacking brilliance from the away side but they almost overturned the pen paper result of this game. The continuous singing from the home fans recollected the lost energy and Olympiakos leaped for an early goal in the second half. After some descent chances and creativity in the Sporting box, the Greek striked late to get something of this game. With only one minute left on the clock, two fast goals from Pardo and Feguiros almost salvaged a late late draw in the game.
But it was too little too late for the home side because it proved an impossible task to find the equiliser in the dying moments and to stop Sporting go back to Portugal with three points.
