Benfica : Benfica’s outstanding Portuguese Primeira Liga win last season granted them automatic passage through to the Champions League group stage, and good news for them their group isn’t that hard on paper means they have a good chance of progressing beyond the groups. So far, their season has started off quite well, despite the loss of some of their key players over the transfer window by the rading of big clubs. Goalkeeper Ederson (Man City), defenders Victor Lindelof (Man Utd) and Nelson Semedo (Barca), and striker Konstantinos Mitroglou (Marseille) left for a combined fee of over £100 million, and whilst they have brought in some players, none of the transfer fees exceeded £10 million. Still, they won the Portuguese Super Cup at the start of August and have won 4 of their 5 league games so far. Now it remains to be seen what they do in their UEFA Champions League campaign. Centre back Jardel and holding midfielder Ljubomir Fejsa are expected to miss out through injury.
Possible line up – Benfica (4-2-2-2) : Varela; Eliseu, Jardel, Luisao, Almeida; Pizzi, Filipe Augusto; Cervi, Silva; Jonas, Seferović.
CSKA : CSKA Moscow have already seen plenty of action this season because they get a lengthy winter break because of their weather conditions. They have played 13 competitive games, winning 10, drawing 1, and losing 3. 4 of these games have been in the Champions League qualifiers (CSKA had to play Pre-qualifiers of Champions League). CSKA’s history in this prestigious league isn’t that bad but they couldn’t get out of the group stage round from 2011 onwards. They will surely try not to repeat the same. Though surprising fact is CSKA are ahead in H2H stats against Benfica. Left winger Aleksandr Makarov will miss out through injury. Else they have a fit squad to face the Portuguese giants.
Possible line up – CSKA (3-5-2) : Akinfeev; A. Berezutski, V. Berezutski, Ignashevich; Nabakin, Golovin, Wernbloom, Dzagoev, Mário Fernandes; Zhamaletdinov, Vitinho.
