Porto begin their 2017/18 Champions league campaign as they welcome Turkish champions Besiktas at their stadium Estadio do Dragao in a Group G clash. Fc Porto are carrying a hundred percent record against turkish oppositions in the competition before the clash proving to be tough opponents to beat. Fc Porto are directly into the group stage of the competition because they finished runners up to champions Benfica in the Portuguese liga. Porto reached the round of 16 stage last season where they were eliminated by Juventus. They are desperate for a better campaign this time out.
Besiktas won their domestic title for successive seasons and hence are directly competing in the group stage. Furthermore, Besiktas are the side which faced most defeats against them in five previous encounters. So Porto are more likely to complete 90 minutes with three point. However, Besiktas can change tables to their hand with their confidence on European stage. In the last season, they gifted some cracking football including comprehensive victories and stunning comebacks. Though they failed to qualify for the last 16 stage, they resume their style of play in the Europa league and made it to the quarter finals where they were eliminated by olympique Lyonnais through penalty shootout. Ambitions are also of the same height as both are desperate for a positive start.
Not only against Porto, Besiktas have only managed two wins in 11 matches against the sides from Portugal. They are facing Portuguese opponents for the three straight season on the European stages and had failed to manage a win. These stats are disturbing but they need to find a way out of this. They can take advantage of Porto’s poor home record though as they managed only two wins in past 11 games in the European competition.
Porto are without their first choice goalkeeper Fabiano due to injury. Further blow to the squad is that Cameroonian striker Vincent Aboubakr is out through suspension.
Maxi perierra is out through one match ban. Besiktas are missing right back Gokhan Gonul, center back Atnic and winger Tore due to injury
These club first met in the 2007/08 season in which Porto prevailed in both the legs winning 1-0 at Istanbul and 2-0 at home. Ricardo Quaresma was the scorer in those two legs. Now he plays in Besiktas and his set to meet his former club.
