The news of ISL outfit Kerala Blasters roping in former Bulgarian star of Manchester United-Dimitar Berbatov is sweeping away the Indian football circuit. The former Premier League maverick is by far the biggest signing by any ISL franchise this season so far.

As the international transfer window is nearing it’s closure, all the ISL clubs have become more active than ever to land their required overseas players.

Amidst these busy activities in the transfer market, Kerala Blasters is slowly wrapping up another huge signing if sources are to be believed. This time former Real Madrid and Arsenal star Julio Baptista.

The news has been floating in Kerala football circuit for the past few days but it never became so prominent as now both the parties have made considerable proceedings on striking a deal.

35 year old Baptista has had a glittering career. Starting from hometown club Sao Paulo, the Brazilian has donned the jerseys of some of the famous names in global football like Real Madrid, Arsenal, AS Roma, Sevilla etc. The former Brazil international last played professional football for Orlando City FC last November and is a free agent since.

Baptista, popularly known as ‘The Beast’ was a prodigious talent who was well-known for his physicality and playmaking skills. From Striker to Central Attacking-Midfield to Wings, Julio Baptista proved his credentials in multiple positions on the field. His versatility also won him 48 caps for the Selecaos.

The former Los Blancos star boasts a glittering trophy cabinet with silverwares like La Liga, Copa America and Confederations Cup to his name. The player has a total of 112 goals and 196 assists to his name in 355 games in club level.

Kerala has been having strong competition from former EPL side Bolton Wanderers. Bolton who have got promoted to the English Championship this season were also in in the race of landing the former Gunner, but recent dip in interest from the English club has made the path smoother for the Blasters.

With the likes of Wes Brown, Dimitar Berbatov in the ranks, Kerala are already having a star-studded lineup. The arrival of Julio Baptista, if it happens will broaden the path of Meulensteen’s men being termed as the first ‘Galacticos’ in ISL history.
