Arsenal came from behind to snatch a memorable opening day victory
Substitute Olivier Giroud headed in a dramatic late winner as Arsenal mounted a remarkable comeback to secure a 4-3 win over Leicester at the Emirates as the Premier League came back with a bang.
Arsenal took the lead after 94 seconds through new boy Alexandre Lacazette. But Shinji Okazaki was quick to reply minutes later but England striker Vardy put the Foxes ahead midway through the first half.Two left-backs – Nacho Monreal and debutant Sead Kolasinac – were paired with Rob Holding, a 21-year-old with nine Premier League starts to his name.
Danny Welbeck had brought Arsenal level at 2-2 but not for long as Jamie Vardy regained the lead for Leicester City at the 56 minute mark.The Gunners were once more saved as substitute Aaron Ramsey poked home eight minutes from time. Then Giroud, so often Arsenal’s super sub last season, saved Wenger’s blushes again with a brilliant header moments later. Ozil returned from an ankle injury to supplement the Arsenal attack, it was the back line that caused the most eyebrows to be raised ahead of kick-off.
The Gunners boss introduced Aaron Ramsey and Giroud after 67 minutes – within 20 minutes Ramsey grabbed an all-important equaliser, then, just two minutes later, the hero Giroud headed off the underside of the crossbar just over the line for the win. Arsenal next faces Stoke City on 18th whereas Leciester City faces Brighton on 19th.
