The past Mizo jewel is set to make a comeback to Kolkata Football
Lalawmpuia or the beloved ‘Lalawm’ of Mohun Bagan fans is set to make a comeback to Kolkata football after about 8years. According to sources, Southern Samity football club is going to take the past Mizoram jewel for Calcutta Premier League.
Lalawmpuia began his football career at the Tata Football Academy. His brilliant performances at the TFA drew attractions of several football clubs. He joined Kolkata giant Mohun Bagan in 2007. His amazing performances in the Calcutta league made him a centre of attraction among star players like Jose Ramires Barreto, Bhaichung Bhutia and Shanmugam Venkatesh. His performances in the famous Kolkata derby made him a fan favourite. He scored one of the goals in a 4-3 win of Mohun Bagan against East Bengal. In the next year, Lalawm continued his prolific scoring. His performances in the Kolkata Derby of that year compelled supporters in considering him as the perfect replacement of Bhaichung Bhutia in Indian national team. He alone won the match for Mohun Bagan by scoring both the goals in the dying minutes of the match.
But too much popularity and money proved to be fatal for Lalawm’s football career. He started drinking and also started taking drugs. These two proved to be the reason for ending his career. He lost his magic touch and went out of Kolkata. He tried to revive his play in Mumbai but it was too late.
The Mizo jewel lost his brightness and gradually disappeared from Indian football. But he was determined to make a comeback. He went back to his village and started practising there for the Southern club. His hard work seemed to have borne fruit at last as he is going to return again to the Mecca of Indian football.
