Could this Belgian be the mystery Centre-Back Guardiola has been craving for?
Manchester City may raid Tottenham for the second time this window to solve their centre-back problem.
Tottenham and Belgian international defender Toby Alderweireld is running through the final two years of his contract and any ongoing talks regarding a new deal have collapsed since.
After Tottenham’s 3-0 defeat against Manchester City in the International Champions Cup, the 28-year-old centre-back shed light on his future admitting the fact that his agent couldn’t reach to any conclusion with Spurs’ officials regarding contract extension. He also expressed his frustration due to Kyle Walker’s sale to Manchester City describing Walker as one of the best full-backs in the world.
Toby’s contractual dilemma along with the fact that he has a £25m release clause in his current contract might encourage some top clubs to join the fray for his signature. Manchester City might well be one of them.
City have been tracking the Belgian for a long time having previously been snubbed by him in favour of a move to Tottenham. Earlier in May this year, The Times reported that City had rejuvenated their interest in Alderweireld. Guardiola has already publicly expressed his desire to bring in another centre-back this summer and Alderweireld might fit the bill perfectly. The Belgian’s Premier League experience as well as low release clause would surely be some exciting prospects for Guardiola’s side to turn down.
Alderweireld joined Tottenham Hotspur from Atletico Madrid in 2015 and since go on to make more than 80 appearances for the London based club. He has also earned 67 caps for the Belgium National Football Team.
