Atletico de Madrid prepared to take legal action against ATK!
Atlético de Madrid are all set to sue Atletico de Kolkata (ATK) for illegal use of there colors which are trademarked and illegal acquisition of ATMs stake without paying them.
With two Indian Super League (ISL) titles, Atletico de Kolkata is undoubtedly the most successful franchise in the league’s short history. However, on-field success has failed to translate in keeping parent club Atletico Madrid happy with their partnership.
Atlético Madrid earlier pulled out of the deal, after ‘unfair profit sharing margins’ between both parties.
A major chunk of Atletico Madrid’s deal was with the month-long pre-season training that takes place. The entire cost is taken up by the Atletico Madrid, including stay, travel, food, training etc, this is apart from the logistical help including talent such as Luis Garcia, Borja and Molina that they have provided to ATK over the years.
After a meeting, they notified ATK that they would like a larger share of the profits, considering the amount of input they provide within the franchise. Hence, ATK were mulling over how to solve this particular issues.
The three-year association of Atletico Madrid and Atletico de Kolkata came to an end as a result of this. The Spanish giants oversaw their Indian investment become wildly successful in the short history of the Indian Super League (ISL), winning the title in two of the three completed seasons.
ATK’s majority shareholder Sanjiv Goenka confirmed that the Kolkata-based outfit will not continue their partnership with Atletico Madrid, citing reasons that the La Liga club didn’t complete their financial responsibilities towards the club. He also stated that the final details of the split needed to be ironed out.
With the forthcoming ISL campaign set to be the biggest ever with more teams than before, ATK have appointed Ashley Westwood as their technical director while Teddy Sheringham is close to joining as the head coach. It is evident that ATK are changing the way they have worked in the past, signalling a departure from the Spanish model they inherited as part of the Atletico Madrid partnership.
But in the meantime the current stance of the current old allies will surely going to raise the eyebrows of the ATK officials. Atletico de Madrid officials have also hinted of lodging a complaint in FIFA and also filing a case in ‘Court of arbitrations’. Incase the legal procedures go against the Kolkata franchise, ATK may also be barred from participating in ISL!
