Benjamin Mendy joins Manchester City
Manchester City have secured the services of French left back Benjamin Mendy.
Mendy has been earmarked by Pep Guardiola as one of Manchester City’s top transfer targets this summer. The 22-year-old France international fired Monaco to Ligue 1 glory last season and helped the french side reaching the semi-finals of the Champions League.
Fullback positions were some of the major problems of Manchester City last season as all of their fullbacks were above 30. The clearout was inevitable this season. Right backs Zabaleta and Sagna left the club after their contract ended along with left-back Gael Clichy. Although Guardiola wanted Kolarov to stay, he recently handed a transfer request and moved to AS Roma. City have already signed Kyle Walker from Tottenham as first choice right back and Danilo from Real Madrid who will possibly be handed a versatile role. City were also trying to land Mendy before they board the plane to US for pre-season tour but couldn’t reach to an agreement with AS Monaco.
Mendy has been teasing the City fans for a long time both in twitter and instagram. He was clearly in favour of a move to the Etihad, the only debacle was Monaco’s valuation of Mendy. But the two parties have eventually agreed to a deal that could reportedly rise upto €57.5m including add-ons.
Mendy has become the second Monaco player to join the blue half of Manchester this summer following the arrival of Portuguese international Bernardo Silva. Both Mendy and Danilo are expected to make their debut in City colours against Real Madrid in the International Champions Cup.
