The Brazil international has completed a move to the Etihad Stadium after Manchester City struck a deal with the Los Merengues.

Danilo, who joined Real in 2015 from Porto but started just 17 La Liga games last season, left Real Madrid’s pre-season training camp in LA to join up at City’s base a short distance from the city yesterday and had his medical. He has joined on a five-year contract and will cost £26.9m.

Guardiola’s full-backs weren’t able to constantly stretch the flanks last season and it hurt Manchester City very dearly. Ex-Arsenal pair Gael Clichy and Bacary Sagna struggled last season and were released, clearing the way for City’s spending spree at the positions this summer.

Danilo, who played 55 times for Los Blancos, is a highly versatile player who can play at both right-back and left-back as well as in midfield. His versatility may prove to be invaluable for the Blues in the upcoming season. He could be used in a rotation with Walker as City aim to compete for major honours both domestically and in the UEFA Champions League. What is clear is City are prepared to pay big to fix their defensive issues from last season.

Danilo said:

“I am very, very happy to be joining Manchester City. There has been strong interest from other clubs, but it has always been my ambition to play for Pep Guardiola. As soon as I heard of his interest, I knew immediately I wanted to be a City player.”

His squad number at City is yet to be confirmed but will be announced in due course.
