Jeremy Mathieu Joins Sporting Lisbon
Jeremy Mathieu joins the Portuguese side on a two year deal with a release cause of €60 million fixed by the club after Barca signing him from Valencia in 2014, the French defender had 91 appearances in his three seasons with FC Barcelona and won 2 La Liga titles, 1 Champions League title and 3 Copa Del Rey titles with the club.
On Friday both the clubs agreed on this deal and FC Barcelona officials decided to terminate his contract with the club as he didn’t fall into the likes of Barca’s new coach Ernesto Valverde.
Firstly, he failed to make his spot in the first team due to the competition from centre backs Gerard Pique and Javier Mascherano and most recently the former Lyon defender Samuel Umtiti also denied him a spot in the first team. Secondly, he had been suffering from injuries from the last 18 months and had only 16 appearances with the club in all competitions.
Jeremy Mathieu will join centre back Sebastian Coates and Ruben Semedo at Sporting to make their defensive line stronger as they conceded 36 times last season mostly due to defensive errors. It is hoped that he will be an important man in Sporting’s League title race which they last won 15 years ago.
