On the Birthday of Sourav Ganguly, the co-owner of the Kolkata franchise of ISL, the news of them being linked to another notable Birthday boy comes on the surface. According to sources, former Spurs and Liverpool striker Robbie Keane is in the radar of the club.

The Kolkata franchise is undergoing an overhaul as a change in ownership is imposing a modification on the total setup of the franchise. From the Spanish invasion during the ownership of Atletico Madrid, the club is slowly getting an English touch as they are rumoured to be getting owned by the City Group who owns Manchester City. The roping in of former Spurs man Teddy Sheringham is seemingly just a sign of things to come.

Robbie Keane made his senior debut for Wolverhampton Wanderers back in ’97. Since then he had stints in numerous club all across the globe. He played for big names like FC Internazionale(2000-01), Liverpool(’08-’09), Tottenham(in two stints), Celtic (on loan) among many others. He lastly has been playing for MLS giants LA Galaxy. He has been playing in the USA since 2011 and has become a free agent only recently.

In the previous window, he was suited by A-League outfit Western Sydney Wanderers and Preston. This time around, Kolkata would get a tough fight from Birmingham City of Harry Redknapp who is also willing to land the 37-year-old striker at the second biggest city in England.

Keane who turns 37 today has had an illustrious career. Besides winning several trophies, there are several individual honours in his name. The Irishman was adjudged Spurs’ Player of the Year thrice and Celtic Player of the Year once. For four seasons in a row from ’12-’15, he was in the ‘MLS Best XI of the season’ and was also voted MLS MVP in 2014. The striker who can also play in the left-wing has netted 282 times in club level in 625 occasions. For his country Republic of Ireland, he has a tally of 68 goals in 146 games.

Although everything is still in the level of ifs and buts, incase he arrives then it would be a big boost for Kolkata. Now it remains to be seen, between Sheringham and Redknapp, who wins the tug of war!
