Benfica have completed the signing of Chris Willock from Arsenal on a 5-year deal.

Willock has been linked with Benfica and there were also rumours about him joining Manchester City. But the 19-year old striker decided to join the Portuguese Champions.

Arsenal were keen to tie him down with a new contract as his contract officially expires on July 1. Arsenal have a good record of promoting their youngsters and giving them opportunities to their first team. But still, the Arsenal prodigy decided to leave the Gunners for Benfica in search of regular playing time at the top level.

Speaking about the move, Willock said:

‘I think we have a great team and we can achieve great things in the future. I hope I can show what I can do on the field.’

The England youth international, who has been with the Gunners since the age of five, was one of the most highly-rated players in Arsenal’s academy set up and Gunners boss Arsene Wenger revealed towards the end of last season that he had high hopes for the starlet who signed his first professional contract with the club back in February 2015.

Arsenal boss, Arsene Wenger said:

‘Chris is a very gifted player with natural strength and natural talent,”
“Overall I would be very comfortable to play him now but of course there is a lot of competition for places because there are players like Walcott, Alexis and Welbeck in front of him at the moment’.

The move should present Willock with a new challenge and will be a new beginning for him in Portugal.
