Subrata Bhattacharya to get ‘Mohun Bagan Ratna’ this year
Subrata Bhattacharya, more famously known as ‘Bablu’ is going to be bestowed the prestigious ‘Mohun Bagan Ratna’ award by Mohun Bagan AC as declared by the club moments ago. The decision has been taken in the executive committee meeting today at the Club tent.
Each year the club gives away several awards in their annual ceremony. But the centre of attention remains the ‘Mohun Bagan Ratna’ award recipient. And there could hardly be any better choice than Bhattacharyya.
Subrata was one of the most prominent centre-backs in his time. The lanky defender from Shyamnagar joined Bagan from Khidderpore and played over half a thousand games for the Mariners netting over half a century goals. He also represented the nation 41 times.
Subrata is one of the most decorated footballers in Indian football history. Besides winning numerous accolades as a player, he also proved his credentials as a coach. He won the NFL twice as Bagan coach and also gave his arch rivals East Bengal the Federation Cup at Ludhiana. Besides the two giants, he also managed United SC in the I-League.
The selection of Bhattacharya has really made the Mariners joyous as there is hardly any ex-player who has a better connection with the fans. Inspite of his controversial stands and dipping in relation with current crop of Bagan officials, the selection could not be more apt.
Balwant Singh has also been declared as the best player of Bagan from last season.
