Barcelona to play Chapecoense in the Joan Gamper Trophy
Barcelona have confirmed that they will play Chapecoense in this year’s edition of the Joan Gamper Trophy.
The edition which is the 52nd will be held on 7th August at the Camp Nou. Chapecoense, as we all remember were involved in a tragic plane accident last November when 71 people on board died, including several club players and manager Luiz Carlos while the plan on its way to the Copa Sundamericana final in Colombia. Later, Atlético Nacional, their opponents in the final asked the Brazilian FA to award the title to Chapecoense.
Barcelona issued a statement saying:
“Barça previously announced its invitation to Chapecoense for this year’s Gamper to help pay tribute to the 71 people who died in the accident on November 28th, 2016, as well as their families. Barça hopes to help Chapecoense rebuild institutionally and recover the competitive level it had before the tragedy.”
The Joan Gamper game traditionally serves as the official unveiling of the team each season in front of the home fans. Last year, the invitees were Serie A side UC Sampdoria who narrowly lost the match by a 3-2 margin.
This will be followed by the Spanish Super Cup first leg tie against Real Madrid, five days later.
