East Bengal Club to honour Hockey legend by Lifetime Achievement Award
Kingfisher East Bengal Club has yesterday declared the name of the athlete to be bestowed upon the ‘Bharatgourab’ award, the lifetime achievement award by the club this year. Dhanraj Pillay, the former skipper of Indian field hockey team will be honoured by the heritageous institution in this year’s annual function.
East Bengal club organize the annual ceremony almost for a week around their establishment date each year and observe the occasion with several activities. But the centre of attention always remains the ‘Bharatgourab’ award giving ceremony which is generally given to a sporting personality who has made India proud in the global arena. Milkha Singh was given the honour last time around.
The selection of Dhanraj Pillay has been welcomed by almost all the East Bengal supporters. The Hockey legend who is considered to be one of the greatest hockey players the land has ever produced represented the nation for fifteen long years from 1989 to 2004.
Pillay captained the India NT for a long time and also won Gold medal in 2003 Asia Cup at Kuala Lumpur. Pillay has won numerous other honours with the country. He was also awarded the ‘Padma Shri’, the fourth highest civilian honour in the country.
Pillay has expressed his gratitude to East Bengal Club for the recognition. He said,
“Although I got many awards in my life but a club like East Bengal honouring me has really made me happy. I will obviously come to Kolkata to receive it.”
