Mohammedan Sporting to inaugurate their new gymnasium by the name of a legendary boxer!
Mohammedan Sporting Club, one of the the three giants of Kolkata football are going to inaugurate their new gymnasium today on the eve of their Iftar Party at the club tent.
Latifuddin Najam, the Hyderabadi legend who has been bestowed the ‘Shaan-e-Mohammedan’ title (Lifetime Achievement Award) yesterday in a ‘Dawat-e-Iftar’ by the club at Kolkata will inaugurate the gymnasium.
But the eyebrow-raiser moment arises when one comes to know that the club will name their new gymnasium by the name of Muhammad Ali, someone who almost has no proper relation with the game of football.
But it should not be considered as a surprise as many people forgot that the legendary boxer had a deep relation with the club. Way back in the Christmas of 1990, when Ali visited ‘The City of Joy’ as a part of his India tour, Mohammedan Sporting Club was the only sporting institution that he visited. Ali visited the century old club on a special invitation by the club officials.
While being queried about their apparently uncanny selection of name for the new gymnasium, Club President Sultan Ahmed said,”Muhammad Ali is an inspiration for any sport. When he visited Kolkata, Mohammedan was the only club he visited”. On this connection he also ensured that the club will field a good team this season but also satirically commented,”We are now forced to become a Calcutta League side now”!
Mohammedan legend Shabbir Ali while being asked about this, he recalled when he met with Ali saying,”He is the greatest sportsman of the century. I do not want to compare but he was something else. He was very soft-spoken. I was really fortunate to have met him.”
