The hosts started their campaign with a dominating 2-0 win against New Zealand. The margin could have been worse if the host had taken all the chances that came their way. So now Russia sits comfortably at the top of Group A, as Mexico held Portugal with a late minute goal to draw 2-2.
Chercheshov was forced to name a young and inexperienced side, as many key players are missing out due to injuries. But the team has responded well as they have been unbeaten for the last 4 matches, as they won against New Zealand and Hungary and drew against Chile and Belgium.
Portugal will be looking to register their first win against Russia as they have faced a surprise draw against Mexico. Fernando Santos will look to improve his side’s defence as they were leaving a lot of space in between and also they could not the lead on two occasions.
Portugal has a strong squad with a lot of talented player at their disposal and with the likes of Cristiano Ronaldo, Nani and Ricardo Quaresma Portugal will look to break the Russian defence time and again. But Portugal’s record against strong teams in not very impressive. So if Fernando Santos’ men want to leave Russia with the trophy they must improve their performances against top sides.
