Lyon sign full-back Fernando Marcal from Benfica on a four-year-deal
Olympique Lyonnais have signed Brazilian full-back Fernando Marçal on a four-year contract from Portuguese champions SL Benfica. The deal is reportedly worth €4.5 million.
The 28-year-old caught Lyon’s attention last season when he was on loan to fellow Ligue 1 side EA Guingamp. He ended the campaign with a total of 31 league appearances while registering seven assists.
In an official statement to the club, Head of Recruitment Florian Maurice said: “Marçal is a very promising player, a complete defender, technical and capable of contributing a lot going forward,”
“He was one of the best assist-providers in Ligue 1 last year. It’s a source of great satisfaction that Marçal has chosen Olympique Lyonnais given the numerous offers he had.”
Marçal started his career with the youth side of Grêmio. He signed for Benfica in 2015 but unfortunately never made an appearance for the club and following two seasons on loan to Turkish side Gaziantepspor and EA Guingamp respectively, he signed for Lyon.
At the official unveiling, Marçal said:
“I’m happy to have signed with Lyon. I didn’t even listen to the other propositions I recieved.”
“My dream is to play with the national Brazilian team & I hope OL will help me to reach this goal too.”
