AS Saint-Etienne appoint Oscar Garcia as their new manager
Ligue 1 side AS Saint-Étienne have appointed former Red Bull Salzburg coach Óscar García as their new manager on a two-year contract that will keep him at the club until June, 2019.
Saint-Étienne finished eighth in the league last season and reached the round of 32 in the Europa League where they were beaten by Manchester United. Óscar’s appointment follows the departure of Christophe Galtier, who managed the club for seven and a half years.

Óscar will begin work in his fourth different league after leaving his role as a coach of Barcelona’s youth academy. So far, he has managed Maccabi Tel Aviv in Israel, Brighton and Hove Albion and Watford in England before joining Austrian side Red Bull Salzburg in 2015.
In both his seasons at the helm, Óscar won the league and the cup title, making him the most successful manager ever in the club’s history.
In a press release, Étienne chairman Bernard Caïazzo said:
“Welcome to Óscar García and his staff at ASSE,”
“Many clubs in Europe have congratulated us for having recruited Óscar García.”
“Roland Romeyer, [sporting director] Dominique Rocheteau and I chose Óscar García because he seems to us to be the man with his staff who best corresponds to the values of the Greens.”
Étienne were previously linked with a move for Patrick Vieira but he decided to stay at New York City.
Club’s Sporting Director Roland Romeyer further added:
“We have studied a number of candidates. Óscar García has the ideal profile.”
“He’s a man of character who grew up surrounded by a winning culture and good football. We’re starting a new development cycle with ambition and enthusiasm.”
