UEFA have announced that they will introduce five new annual awards in recognition of the top performers in UEFA club competitions each season.

The new new accolades will be presented alongside the annual UEFA Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year awards.

The honour includes:

a) Goalkeeper of UEFA Champions League season.
b) Defender of UEFA Champions League season.
c) Midfielder of UEFA Champions League season.
d) Forward of UEFA Champions League season.

There is also a separate award for the top performer in the Europa League – UEFA Europa League Player of the Season.

This year the awards will be given during the Champions League and Europa League group stages draw to be held on the 24th and 25th of August respectively.

How does the voting work?

The voting committee will consist of club coaches whose teams participated in the group stages of both the leagues. The panel will also consist of 55 journalists from the European Sports Media (ESM) group representing all the UEFA member associations. However, coaches will not be allowed to vote for players of their own club.

The shortlist of all the nominees for the five awards will be announced on August 4 while the three candidates for the UEFA Men’s and Women’s Player of the Year will be announced on August 15 following the conclusion of the 2017 UEFA Women’s EURO.
