Konaté becomes Leipzig’s third major signing of the summer after Yvon Mvogo and Philipp Köhn

RB Leipzig have signed 18-year-old French defender Ibrahima Konaté from Ligue 2 side Sochaux-Montbéliard on a five-year-deal.

Konaté becomes the third major signing of the summer after Yvon Mvogo and Philipp Köhn who joined from Young Boys and VfB Stuttgart respectively.

Born in Paris, the 6.2 ft French international played for Paris FC’s youth side before joining Sochaux-Montbéliard. Working his way through the club’s youth and reserve system, Konaté made his first team debut for Sochaux in their Coupe de la Ligue quarter-final clash against AS Monaco. He then went on to make a total of 13 appearances, scoring a goal in the process.

Konaté has also played for the France U-16 and U-17 side respectively, making a total of 17 appearances while scoring one goal.

Ibrahima is primarily a centre-back but can also operate in defensive midfield positions.

Leipzig’s Sporting Director Ralf Rangnick expressed his opinion on the new signing, saying:

“We have been watching Ibrahima Konaté for some time. He is a young, highly-rated player who will strengthen our defensive. We are very happy that we could bring this top talent to us, so that Ibrahima can go on his next career step here. He has tremendous abilities with his 18 years, and we are convinced that we will still have a lot of fun with him. “
