Borussia Dortmund travel to Rielasingen-Arlen while Bayern play Chemnitzer FC

The German FA has announced the first round of fixtures of the DFB-Pokal Cup 2017-18 season.

The round will kick-off on August 11 and will continue until 14th August with 64 teams accross seven divisions competing to qualify for the next rounds. Defending champions Borussia Dortmund will begin their title defense away to sixth-tier side FC Rielasingen-Arlen while Bayern Munich travel to third-tier Chemnitzer FC.

Rielasingen-Arlen qualified courtesy of their Südbadischer Pokal triumph (Germany’s regional cup competition) and were duly rewarded by drawing Dortmund at home. Chemnitzer qualified for the competition after winning the Saxony Cup.

Bundesliga runners-up RB Leipzig kick-off their campaign against Sportfreunde Dorfmerkingen who qualified as the Württemberg Cup champions. Julian Nagglesmann’s TSG Hoffenheim will face Thuringian Cup winners FC Rot-Weiß Erfurt.

The season kicks off with recently relegated FC Ingolstadt travelling to face their Bavarian neighbours 1860 Munich, the former Bundesliga champions who now play in the Regionalliga Bayern (Germany’s fourth-tier) after they were relegated twice in a week.

Some interesting facts…

1. Chemnitzer FC vs. Bayern Munich – Chemnitzer FC, who will face Bayern Munich in the first round, is the first club of Germany and Bayern legend Michael Ballack.
2. VfB Germania Halberstadt vs. SC Freiburg – Germania Halberstadt is managed by Andreas Petersen who will face his son Nils Petersen, the former Bayern Munich and current Freiburg striker.
3. The DFB-Pokal winner will qualify for the DFL-Supercup and the UEFA Europa League unless the winner already qualifies for the UEFA Champions League in the Bundesliga.
4. During the 2000-01 season, Vfb Stuttgart were drawn against VfB Stuttgart II, their reserve team. Since then the rules have been changed to rule out odd pairings.
